Intimate Equations

A photographer renowned for his unique and introspective work, Arno Rafael Minkkinen has been exploring themes of identity, the body and the profound relationship between humans and nature for over fifty years. His work, rooted in a black-and-white film aesthetic, is distinguished by the recurring use of his own body, integrated or concealed within the landscape, in constant interaction with the natural elements.

During his residency, he continues this approach by exploring the landscapes of Normandy. There, he creates a new, previously unseen series in which his body once again becomes the thread of a poetic dialogue with the region.

At the same time, a retrospective selection of his most iconic photographs will be on display on Deauville beach, retracing six decades of work deeply rooted in nature and intimacy.

A Finnish-American photographer born in Helsinki in 1945, Arno Rafael Minkkinen lives and works in Andover, Massachusetts. For 50 years, he has devoted himself to nude self-portraits in dialogue with the wilderness, without manipulation. Carried out in more than 30 countries and 30 US states, his work has earned him more than 100 exhibitions. For him, photography reveals the invisible and invites us to see the world as a child does. Represented by numerous galleries around the world, his works are included in the collections of the MoMA (New York), the Centre Pompidou (Paris), and the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography.
