NEXUS

A muscular physique has become a real social imperative. Long neglected or stigmatised, gyms now cater to an increasingly diverse audience, mixing men and women. These places are becoming as much theatres of self-construction as spaces for social exchange and interaction.
Jérémy Appert takes an incisive look at these spaces where leisure, aspirations, frustrations, pleasures and suffering intermingle. He captures tense bodies subjected to the demands of performance, competitiveness and resilience. His work, in black and grey, uses an intensified digital grain, creating images with a metallic texture where bodies and machines intertwine.

Born in 1990 in Pont-Audemer, Jérémy Appert lives in Seine-Maritime. Self-taught, his artistic practice has been shaped by movement, observation and contrasting immersive experiences. In search of emancipation, he documents individuals in their quest for freedom and their disillusionment. His work has been exhibited at Circulation(s) (Paris).
