portfolio reviews

Planches Contact Festival

_
Portfolio reviews offer photographers, whether beginners or experienced, a special opportunity to present their work to image experts. This essential exchange, taking place for the first time at the heart of the festival's residence, La Villa Namouna, provides a chance to develop their practice and advance their projects.
Portfolio reviews are open to all photographers seeking constructive feedback on their work.

During twenty-minute individual meetings, they have the opportunity to meet professionals from the world of images: gallery owners, curators, critics, iconographers, publishers and festival directors.

These exchanges provide an outside perspective, allowing artists to refine their artistic approach, adjust their visual narrative or explore new avenues.

Planète Initial

_
With Planète Initial, the Initial Labo laboratory is setting up shop in Deauville for a weekend of meetings, discussions and demonstrations. A lively space dedicated to contemporary photography and those who create it, at the heart of the opening days.

Planète Initial is once again transforming Les Franciscaines into a living laboratory: an open platform where people can exchange ideas, share knowledge, showcase their work and ask questions. Conceived by Initial Labo, a loyal partner of the festival, this event shines a spotlight on those who, alongside photographers, help bring images to life: printers and technicians.

Two workshops will be offered during the weekend: a creative writing workshop based on the exhibition Intimacy with Sophie Papaz and one dedicated to creating a fanzine with Alexandre Morelli.

intimacy and landscape

Arno Rafael Minkkinen

_
Photographer Arno Rafael Minkkinen looks back on sixty years of creativity, combining the human body, landscape and introspection. An exceptional encounter exploring a body of work where intimacy dialogues with wide open spaces.

Arno Rafael Minkkinen, a major figure in contemporary photography, shares his unique artistic journey, which began in the 1970s. For more than six decades, he has tirelessly explored the relationship between his own body and the landscape in self-portraits that are poetic, physical and deeply spiritual. Each image seems to arise from a silent dialogue between him and the territories he travels, between vulnerability and strength. During this encounter, Minkkinen reflects on his process, his commitments, his inspirations, and what it means to create images at the frontier between the intimate and the universal.

A rare moment with an artist who continues to defy time, space — and gravity.

Planches Contact Festival lights up Les Franciscaines with a cabaret-themed evening. With cabaret La Sirène à Barbe and DJ Corrinne, glitter takes over the Cloister before the start of the photo competition La 25e heure Longines.

Cabaret La Sirène in Barbe, founded in Dieppe, combines drag, burlesque, transformism and socially conscious performances in a joyful and inclusive atmosphere.
To get the party started, DJ Corrinne – an icon of Parisian nightlife – will then set the turntables alight with her tailor-made selection before the launch of the La 25e Heure Longines photo competition.

à nos visages s’abandonner

Jean-François Spricigo

_
For this new edition of the Planches Contact Festival, photographer Jean-François Spricigo invites you to an intimate experience. The stage becomes a studio, where the artist works with the spectator, who becomes a witness or model, to create their own photographic portrait.

This experience places the audience at the heart of the installation. While some volunteers pose for the artist's camera, others observe. This sequence allows everyone to participate in the narrative and the questions raised by photography, the relationship to the image and one's own reflection.

With a particular focus on encounters between people, Jean-François Spricigo continues with à nos visages s’abandonner (surrendering to our faces), a project combining photography, video, writing and poetry to explore – without staring – the porous boundaries of identity and dare to sing an ode to our pluralities.

When artificial intelligence creates photographs of our memories

Serge Tisseron

_
While leafing through an old family album, Serge Tisseron is surprised not to find a photograph that he remembers clearly. He draws it, then recreates it with the help of Artificial Intelligence (AI). A few weeks later, the chance discovery of the original reveals a different image! Thus begins an almost detective-like investigation into how memory works, but also into the power that AI will soon have to make our most intimate memories visible in very real photographs.

How will each of us experience this situation, individually and as a family?

Serge Tisseron is a psychiatrist, doctor of psychology, and member of the Academy of Technologies. He has written more than forty books on family secrets, our relationship with images, and now on how technology is transforming us. He is the author of Le Mystère de la Chambre claire, photographie et inconscient (Flammarion). He is currently working on AI. His books have been translated into fifteen languages.

Frédéric Stucin is a graduate of the École Nationale Supérieure Louis Lumière. He specialises in portraits of famous and ordinary people, particularly for the press, where he also publishes reports.

Women photographers are dangerous

Laure Adler & Clara Bouveresse

_
The profession of photographer has always been open to women because it was not standardised; it was a young, unstable profession, not necessarily prestigious or exclusive. From the 19th century onwards, many women took up the emerging art of photography. Present in all fields, from art to journalism, fashion, science and advertising, they nevertheless too often encountered a lack of recognition and visibility.

Laure Adler, journalist and author, and Clara Bouveresse, lecturer at the University of Evry, exhibition curator and author, honour these women photographers through a personal selection, bringing together essential pioneers, forgotten figures and young discoveries. Some are involved in politics or feminist activism, others venture into war zones or break with norms and conventions. All take risks, emancipate themselves from established frameworks and invent new forms, new ways of being and working. These women are ‘dangerous’ because they challenge the expectations and assumptions surrounding their profession and status: they invite us to imagine new worlds.

Intimate Deauville

Writing and photography: two inseparable elements
Workshop by Julien Magre

_
"Julien Magre's work is part of a biographical journey, and the photographs [...] capture the tenderness of time passing over loved ones. The intimacy that is shown is never simple, as the photographer takes great care not to reveal every detail of his life, thus transforming everyday banality into something else entirely," writes Héloïse Conésa, curator at the BNF, about Julien's work.

Julien Magre is the winner of the Niépce Prize in 2022. Drawing on his wealth of experience, he offers participants photography and writing workshops to create a series about the town of Deauville with an intimate approach. The aim is also to produce a text, which can take any form, such as poems, notes, a diary, prose, etc.

The aim of this workshop is to produce images, experiment, edit, find the right order and rhythm to create a coherent narrative, a series that ‘holds together’.

Technical issues will be set aside as much as possible to give priority to analysis and image selection.

Duration: 3 days
Price: €300 / Under 26s: €250
