When nature self-generates, it produces its own existence, its own laws, and its own fractures, punctuated by the passage of shadow and light, creating forms and tensions we could never have imagined. Nature envelopes and covers all human traces, sculpting a new, living landscape in perpetual mutation.
Lise Sarfati's work unfolds in two directions: living nature that auto-generates in wild or humanabandoned places, and human nature evoked by two young girls.
The girls are going through a complete transformation, and also projecting themselves into The New Life—to use the title of one of Lise Sarfati's books—yet oh, how many questions do they ask themselves facing the void?
Lise Sarfati
Lise Sarfati is a French artist photographer. She lives and works in Paris. Her work explores the relationships between the individual, architecture, and public space.
Since 2012, she has been developing a body of work centered on the urban landscape of Los Angeles, which has now become her primary territory for sensory and emotional exploration.
A recipient of the Niepce Prize and the Infinity Award from the International Center of Photography (New York), Lise Sarfati is represented in prestigious public and private collections, including the Centre Pompidou, the Bibliothèque nationale de France (BnF), the Maison Européenne de la Photographie (Paris), Los Angeles County Museum of Art, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA), the Brooklyn Museum, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art (Kansas City), de Young Museum (San Francisco), Harry Ransom Center (Austin, Texas), Wilson Centre for Photography (London), and Sir Elton John’s collection (United Kingdom).
Her solo exhibitions have been presented at Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Maison Européenne de la Photographie (Paris), DA2 – Domus Artium 2002 (Salamanca, Spain), Nikolaj Kunsthal – Center for Contemporary Art (Copenhagen, Denmark), and Centre national de la photographie (Paris). Her work has also been exhibited at leading international galleries, including Yossi Milo (New York), Rose Gallery (Los Angeles), Brancolini Grimaldi (Roma, London) and La Galerie Particulière (Paris).
