Iranian Youth

During this Hors-Les-Murs residency in Tehran, Newsha Tavakolian continues this exploration by revisiting images taken from Blank Pages of an Iranian Photo Album and And They Laughed at Me. She combines contact sheets, damaged photographs, negatives, paint and physical interventions in a unique collage in which faces and gestures re-emerge as emotional relics spanning generations.

An Iranian photographer, visual artist and teacher born in 1981 in Tehran (Iran), Newsha Tavakolian lives and works in Amsterdam. Creating work that straddles the boundary between art and documentary, she blurs the lines between reality and imagination. A member of Magnum Photos, she highlights the human condition, particularly that of women, as well as the tensions associated with conflict zones, across the globe and especially in Iran. The winner of numerous international awards, including the Carmignac Gestion Prize and the Prince Claus Award, she has exhibited extensively internationally, including at the Palais de Tokyo (Paris) and the Mudec (Milan). Her works are held in the collections of the V&A Museum, the British Museum (London), the LACMA (Los Angeles) and the Smithsonian (Washington DC).
